Staying Ahead of the Curve

For many people, poker is a business. It’s either their main source of income now or will be in the future. Any businessman will tell you that the most important thing to remember is to stay ahead of the game. Learn what your competitors are doing and then find ways to overcome them. Know exactly what your fiercest rivals are likely to do in any situation. In poker, it’s exactly the same. You need to be on the cutting edge of what’s going on in the industry at all times. With the adaptation of poker to the internet, the game is changing every single second. By the time you finish this sentence, poker will be, in some way, completely different from the way it was when you started it. So how do you stay ahead of the curve? We’ve got some helpful tips for you.

  1. Read forums. These are the breeding ground for new poker strategies. Many of the top players in the world discuss hand histories, peculiar player moves, and poker industry news. All of this discussion takes place in one central place so it’s very easy to spend a few minutes reading about a wide variety of topics. There are numerous forums to choose from; pick one and start reading it every single day. Forums enable discussion of the latest trends in poker, which is what you should be looking for. If you have any questions or want to bounce an idea off of someone, go ahead and post it in a forum. I guarantee you’ll get a wealth of helpful responses within minutes.
  2. Ask other players. It’s always important to ask your fellow poker players what trends they’ve seen recently in the game. Is it becoming looser? Is it becoming tighter? Are people raising out of position more now than they were in 2004? These are the types of questions you should talk about with your peers in the poker world. Find a variety of friends to discuss it with, meaning people who were around the game early on as well as newcomers. Each will see poker in a completely different light.
  3. Take notes. I always find it’s helpful to take notes when I play on sites like PokerRoom and Titan Poker (by the way, check out our Bonus Codes at our PokerRoom Bonus Code and Titan Poker Bonus Code pages). These aren’t musings about other player’s strategies. Rather, after I’m done playing a session, I jot down one or two tendencies of players. What did they do that stood out? Did they call a lot more than I saw last week? Were there a few moves that I didn’t quite understand? Over time, I can glance back through my notes and look for patterns, which can be extremely helpful when it comes to improving your game and staying up to date.
  4. Try new styles of play. If you’re a loose player, play tight for a few hours. If you’re normally a tight player, loosen your game up. Try to figure out how other players at the table react to you, which can in turn help you deduce where the trends in the industry are going. In total, it’s hard to see what your opposition is likely to do until you’ve attacked them from a few different angles.
  5. Read player interviews. In many interviews with esteemed poker players that you’ll find, a question along the lines of “How has poker changed since you got started?” is asked. The answers to this vary each time, so scope out a few interviews to see what each person answered. Many would argue, for example, that the game has become much looser over time. However, recently, that trend may be bucked. Important information like that is often given in a person’s responses.

Regardless of your pre-conceived notions of strategy, it’s important to be willing to change. The adage is “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks.” Don’t let that old dog be you. Keep as up to date as possible on how the game of poker is changing and then react accordingly.
