Your right it is in't as low in variance depending on your style and plays bigger than other limit games (due to the extra betting, if you count it up you can put considerable amount more into the pot in one hand than limit holdem for the same limits).

There are a number of different strategies you can take to the game (and win using all the different ones) and some are high in variance while others are fairly low. At the low limits where people are just spewing chips if you play tight you will be fine.

As for how much, BR issues are different for different people but I would say you want 25% more than for limit holdem (or more if your still learning the game because it is more complex than some people realise, I constantly get called a donkey for pushing a hand where i am the math favourite and "suck out" or betting 7th "to increase the rake")

Thanks for the reply. I'm experiencing a big downswing right now approx 400 bbs. If I see a jack or a 9 on 4th or 5th street again I'm going to cry lol. Any experience of Ollek UB?? I just can not beat that guy on AP...He is my nemesis.

you need to figure if it is a downswing or bad play.

People often write losing off as a downswing and not bad play when in reality bad play is an influencing fact.

Limit games tend to be more swingy than nl games (i know some people don't understand this, but in reality in limit you cards are more important than the nl/pl games).

I suggest you have a look at your own play .

Yes of course I do understand that and Ive been reviewing the HHS after every session I had rolled up trips 11 times and only won with them once. Im always looking to improve I was just curious because on another forum i was told 2-300 BBs was ideal for stud hilo and you should never go broke. just wanted a second opinion. Are you theraider on UB?

ya i am, but I am done there once this race is over I think.

rolled up hands are kind of painful because you often end up freerolling the other player.

With my strategy I tend to lose a little then go through rushes where I make it all up. Obviously the key to the game is the scoop.

I just say that because a lot of stud8 strategy advice is varied. Like the people that play the supersystem way are my bread and butter and they constantly freeroll me. That said you can win playing the SS style.

so your suggesting $100 for the 0.25/0.5 level? That is too small I agree. I would think $250 would be more in the ballpark. Even at those limits it is pretty easy to lose $10-20 pretty fast if you get some bad luck/cooler hands and there goes 10-20% of the roll. That said at UB allowing for the bonus clearing will help you significantly. With your losing period are you actually losing or are you pretty much even thanks to the bonus?

Also as the limits go up you need more of a roll. Like at those limits I am giving up a little ev because I am only playing my cards not watching other peoples (since everyone even the reg's are generally pretty bad) but at higher limits a lot of your profit comes from watching all the cards and knowing how live stuff is. You will also have higher variance as you move up.

I would guess that if you are extremely tight, people will notice and you'll end up winning small pots while gradually paying away blinds and antes.

Do you use a HUD to keep track of shown cards?

Trust me at those limits people don't. You still get half the table playing like total idiots.

Yeah once you get higher the up cards are so important but at those limits and the high ante means you nearly always have odds if your playing tight.
