Greg “FBT” Mueller Grabs Bracelets #1 and #2

Prior to the 2009 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Greg “FBT” Mueller was one of the names poker fans suggested as being “best player without a bracelet.” Now Mueller has not just one but two new gold bracelets to his name and joins the growing list of players to win multiple bracelets this year, joining the ranks of Jeffrey Lisandro, Phil Ivey and online phenom Brock “t_soprano” Parker.

First, Mueller took down the prestigious $10,000 buy-in Limit Hold’em Championship Event, besting a final table that included Chad Brown, Daniel Alaei, Pat Pezzin and internet Limit Hold’em cash game specialist Matt Hawrilenko. Then, just a week later, he was right back at the final table, this time in the $1,500 buy-in Limit Hold’em Shootout event.

Players in the shootout had to navigate through three separate tables, each time playing down to a sole survivor who moved on to the next round. Mueller beat his first two tables in order to make it to the final 8-handed table and for a moment it looked like his dear friend Shawn Buchanan might be joining him there, but he was ousted late in Round Two and had to settle for a seat on Mueller’s rail.

It didn’t take long for Mueller and WSOP bracelet winner Mark Naalden to break away from the pack at the final table (which also featured former bracelet winner David Williams) and, in the end, it came down to the two of them heads-up. Naalden won his first bracelet earlier this summer when he won the $2,000 buy-in Limit Hold’em event, so not only was a second bracelet on the line for both players, but also bragging rights as the most successful Limit Hold’em player of the Series.

The heads-up match was a lengthy one and it appeared as though Mueller was about to deliver the knock out blow to his opponent much earlier in the night before Naalden rallied to bring the chip counts back to even. Mueller was able to pull away once again, this time for good, and claim his second bracelet just days after the first one.

After the event, Mueller made a prediction regarding his success the remainder of the Series. “They say good things come in threes”, Mueller observed. “There are still two more events, so who knows?” A third bracelet could propel Mueller past Jeffrey Lisandro in the Player of the Year points race. With his second bracelet and third final table this year Mueller currently sits in fourth place just behind Phil Ivey with 240 points. Lisandro is still in the lead with 355 points.
